Dry cleaning story

Modern dry cleaning's use of non-water-based solvents to remove soil and stains from clothes was reported as early as 1855. The potential for using petroleum-based solvents such as gasoline and kerosene was recognized by French dye-works operator Jean Baptiste Jolly, who offered a new service that became known as nettoyage à sec i.e. dry cleaning. Flammability concerns led William Joseph Stoddard, a dry cleaner from Atlanta, to develop Stoddard solvent (white spirit) as a slightly less flammable alternative to gasoline-based solvents. The use of highly flammable petroleum solvents caused many fires and explosions, resulting in government regulation of dry cleaners. After World War I, dry cleaners began using chlorinated solvents. These solvents were much less flammable than petroleum solvents and had improved cleaning power.

On March 3, 1821, Thomas L. Jennings became the first African-American to be granted a United States patent. The patent was for his invention of a cleaning process called "dry scouring," which was the precursor to dry cleaning.

Environment friendly dry cleaning services:

      Here's how:

  • Dry Cleaning Solvents: Distillation, filtration and drying are performed on used solvents to prepare them for reuse. All impurities are removed to ensure that the next rounds of garments are exposed to the same pure solvents as the previous round. Drying garments emitting vapors from solvents are recaptured and condensed back to liquid form for reuse.

  • Unclaimed garments: Any garment or item left unclaimed by its owner is taken to charitable organizations and clothing banks. And it's not just one shirt - we're talking about the thousands of garments that go unclaimed annually, all donated to such programs as "Project Wear and Share," co-sponsored by Goodwill Industries and "Give a Coat, Share the Warmth." Unclaimed clothing, coats, comforters and blankets make a valuable difference to those in needs. Dry cleaners also frequently participate in collecting clothing to be cleaned and repaired free of charge so that they may be donated to the less fortunate.

  • Hangers: Hangers can be recycled. Simply bring them back to your dry cleaner.

  • Climate, Water, Waste

  • Our strategy is to make a positive impact by focusing on three core areas:

CLIMATE

  • Climate change poses complex challenges that will require a wide range of strategies and solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For P&G, this means we are striving to reduce energy consumption associated with our plants and products, use less carbon intense raw materials and energy, and ensure that sourcing of key commodities like palm and pulp are not contributing to deforestation.

WATER

  • With the current water situation in the world today, we have an obligation not only to reduce the water we use in the manufacturing phase but also to help educate consumers about water consumption when they use our products. We achieved our short-term goal of a 20% water reduction in our manufacturing sites and are focusing our conservation efforts in water-stressed regions.

WASTE

  • We are committed to reducing waste in our manufacturing sites. More than half our sites are zero waste to landfill, and we continue to look for ways to improve our packaging to reduce waste and ensure it can be recycled.
